Kakariko Village

  1. Head to the northeast corner of Hyrule Field and climb the stone steps into Kakariko Village, at the foot of Death Mountain.

    #1.1
  2. Make your way up through the village to the gate onto Death Mountain Trail. Show the guard Zelda's Letter by using it from your item menu while standing in front of him.

    #1.2
  3. He chuckles at the princess's note but opens the gate. He also mentions that his son would love a Keaton Mask.

    #1.3
  4. Tip

Showing the letter also opens the Happy Mask Shop in Hyrule Market. Borrow the Keaton Mask, sell it to this guard, and you start a mask-selling side quest that eventually earns the useful Mask of Truth.

    #1.4
  5. Watch out

The guard suggests a sturdier shield, and he's right. Get the Hylian Shield in the graveyard before Dodongo's Cavern, because flames there can burn the Deku Shield to ash.

    #1.5
02

Around the Village

  1. Talk to the Cucco Lady beside her pen. She's allergic to her own birds and has lost seven of them; find each one and toss it back into the pen.

    #2.1
  2. Tip

Carrying a Cucco lets you glide down from high places, which helps you reach the birds stranded on rooftops and ledges.

    #2.2
  3. You get

Return all seven to receive an empty Bottle. Use it to carry fairies, bugs and potions.

    #2.3
  4. Collectible

Kakariko has five Gold Skulltulas, all out at night: in the big tree near the entrance (roll into it), on the House of Skulltula, in the building under construction, on the house beside the Death Mountain gate, and on the watchtower ladder (use the Slingshot).

    #2.4
  5. Tip

Bring Gold Skulltula tokens to the House of Skulltula. A family there is cursed, and every 10 tokens earns a reward, starting with a bigger wallet.

    #2.5
03

Kakariko Graveyard

  1. The graveyard lies past the windmill at the edge of the village.

    #3.1
  2. Watch out

A boy watches over the graves during the day, so you can only pull back headstones at night.

    #3.2
  3. At night, go to the lower part of the graveyard and pull back the second headstone from the left, the one with flowers in front of it. Drop into the hole and open the chest.

    #3.3
  4. You get

You obtain the Hylian Shield. It's too big for a child, so you crouch behind it like a turtle shell, but fire can't burn it.

    #3.4
  5. Dampé the gravekeeper runs his Heart-Pounding Gravedigging Tour at night. Pay 10 Rupees, point to a dirt patch, and he digs it up.

    #3.5
  6. Collectible

Piece of Heart: one of Dampé's dig spots can turn one up. The prizes are random, so it may take several tries.

    #3.6
04

Optional: The Royal Family's Tomb

  1. At the back of the graveyard, stand on the Triforce symbol in front of the large tombstone and play Zelda's Lullaby. Lightning blasts the stone apart; jump into the hole.

    #4.1
  2. In the first room, shoot down every Keese with the Slingshot. The door unbars once they're all gone.

    #4.2
  3. Watch out

The next room is home to ReDeads. Their scream freezes you in place so they can grab you, so give them a wide berth and walk past carefully.

    #4.3
  4. You get

At the end, an inscription on the wall teaches you the Sun's Song.

    #4.4
  5. Tip

Play the Sun's Song to switch between day and night, so you never have to wait for nightfall again. It also freezes ReDeads in their tracks.

    #4.5
  6. Collectible

Piece of Heart: at night, pull back the grave fourth from the right in the top row and drop in. Deal with the ReDead below, then play the Sun's Song to make a chest appear.

    #4.6
  7. Collectible

Gold Skulltula: drop a bug from a Bottle on the soft soil patch in the graveyard.

    #4.7

Through the Lost Woods

  1. The Goron leader won't be easy to win over, and Saria can help. Travel back across Hyrule Field to Kokiri Forest and enter the Lost Woods through its entrance in the village.

    #5.1
  2. Tip

Mido has no part to play right now, but remember him. Seven years from now he'll guard this route, and only Saria's Song will get you past.

    #5.2
  3. The Lost Woods is a maze of clearings linked by hollow-log passages. Take a wrong exit and you end up back at the entrance.

    #5.3
  4. Listen to the music. In every clearing, the correct exit is the one where the melody gets louder; follow it each time.

    #5.4
  5. Tip

If you'd rather have it written down, the route from the Kokiri Forest entrance is: right, left, right, left, straight ahead, left, right.

    #5.5
  6. Partway through, Kaepora Gaebora perches in a clearing and reminds you to trust your ears.

    #5.6
06

Sacred Forest Meadow

  1. The route ends at a barred gate. As you approach, a Wolfos leaps out to stop you.

    #6.1
  2. The Wolfos blocks sword swings from the front, so dodge its swipe, then hit it from the side or behind. Beating it opens the gate.

    #6.2
  3. Beyond is a hedge maze patrolled by Mad Scrubs that pop up and spit nuts. Reflect them with your shield and keep moving toward the staircase at the far end.

    #6.3
  4. Two more Scrubs guard the top of the stairs. Clear them and walk into the clearing beyond, where Saria sits on a tree stump in front of an old ruin.

    #6.4
  5. You get

Saria is glad you found her secret place. Take out your ocarina when she starts to play, and she teaches you Saria's Song.

    #6.5
  6. Tip

Play Saria's Song anywhere to talk to Saria through your ocarina. She offers advice when you're unsure where to go.

    #6.6
  7. Tip

On the way out, climb the ladder on the maze wall to skip the maze. Up top, drop through a hole into a fairy fountain to heal and catch a fairy in a Bottle.

    #6.7

Lost Woods Extras

  1. Collectible

Piece of Heart: near the start of the Lost Woods, a Skull Kid plays a flute on a tree stump. Stand on the stump below him and play Saria's Song; he's so pleased he gives you a Piece of Heart.

    #7.1
  2. Collectible

Piece of Heart: stand on the stump below the target near the start of the Lost Woods, and two Skull Kids challenge you to copy their tunes. Clear all three rounds to win it.

    #7.2
  3. Tip

Hit the bullseye of that target with the Slingshot three times in a row to win a bigger Deku Seed bag.

    #7.3
  4. Tip

A Business Scrub near the Lost Woods' bridge to Hyrule Field sells a Deku Stick capacity upgrade for 40 Rupees once you've knocked him out of his hole.

    #7.4
